The Coming of Vertumnus

  1. THE COMING OF VERTUMNUS - A black ink and black color pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size coquille board. It appears in "Weird Tales No.309".

Sometimes, a drawing just seems to create itself. After reading the story I decided to do a full page drawing of the flower-woman in the story. I started sketching on practice paper, drawing the outline of a woman in the pose that you see here, adding simple lines for the eyes, nose, and mouth. Satisfied with the outline, I used tracing paper to transfer it to a coquille board sheet on which I would do the finished drawing.

And then I began to draw flower petals extending away from the left eye, and more petals flowing away from the right eye, and I just kept adding flower petals until I had the entire woman covered with flower petals.

All that time, as I had been drawing, I was listening to some of my favorite music CDs, occasionally singing along with the music. I remember singing one song in particular, replaying it over and over, "I know that someday you'll want me to want you," And before I realized it, the drawing was done, just in time for lunch! I had worked only half a day on the drawing and spent the other half fooling around with my computer, creating a new data file for all the books in my library. That was a fun day, and I'm glad to say that over my career I had quite a few of them.
